Martha Mitchell's Place in History-
The Nature and Significance of Her
Impact on Washington Politics.

If a clown told you that there was a man holding a knife walking up behind you, would you believe it?   Probably not, but if a well-dressed, sophisticated woman told you the same, more than likely you would believe it.  This situation is very similar to Martha Mitchell's position in Watergate.  Through all of the turmoil and confusion, Martha Mitchell proved to be persistent, brave, and a pioneer of women's empowerment.   Martha is remembered for taking a stand for what was right.

One reason that Martha is an important part of history is for her persistence.  Even when all of the odds were against her, Martha kept trying.  A politician's wife was expected to be involved in her husband's career only by being a good hostess for parties, but, of course, Martha did not abide by this social rule.  She was ignored by the White House staff since she was only a "crazy, loud-mouthed wife and not a person of significance".  Even after being brushed away by the press and even her husband, Martha still pursued her beliefs.  By doing this, Martha became an inspiration instilling a sense of self-motivation in many people.

Another factor that made Martha such an outstanding woman was her astounding bravery.  After strong opposition from so many people, one would think that she would see the odds and give up, but, of course she stood tall.  Martha believed in herself and was not scared of the remarks of others.  It is often exhausting to stand alone in difficult situations, especially such perilous ones as Watergate.  Martha risked a lot by standing against not only her husband, but also the President of the United States.  The caliber of heroism she displayed was, and always will be, very inspiring.

Last, but not least, Martha prevailed in her efforts to empower women.  She was not the ordinary "politician's wife".  She broke every standard and shocked many people in the process.  Although it caused Martha and her husband much distress, Martha was an ideal role model for many women of the present.  Her tenacity was an important medium in giving other women the courage to speak their opinions and become involved for their true convictions.  Martha's actions should be looked upon as large steps toward equality and boldness for women.

Martha Mitchell, even though many do not know, has influenced the lives of many Americans.  Her name may sometimes be omitted in the presidency of Richard Nixon and Watergate, but her link in the series of events in so vital that Nixon himself admitted that without Martha there would have been no Watergate.  Martha showed her true colors through a persistent spirit, her bravery, and her ability to inspire women's empowerment.  Although she was looked upon as crazy, those of us who know the story of this woman know that "MARTHA WAS RIGHT".
